Dimensional Analysis

Convert quantities by multiplying by named equalities, cancelling units, and treating squared and cubed units as powers.

Convert by multiplying by one

A conversion factor is a ratio of two exactly equal physical quantities written as a fraction. For example, 1 ft and 0.3048 m name exactly the same length. Their ratio therefore has the numerical value 1, so multiplying by it changes the unit expression without changing the physical quantity.

Either orientation is valid: 1 ft / 0.3048 m and 0.3048 m / 1 ft both equal 1. Choose the orientation that cancels the unwanted unit. To convert 12 m to feet, put meters on the bottom:

12 m × = 39.370078740… ft ≈ 39.3701 ft.

For the reverse conversion, turn the same exact equality over so feet cancel:

39.370078740… ft × = 12 m.

Do not memorize an arrow. Write the desired unit, then arrange the factor so the unwanted unit cancels. The units tell you whether the fraction is facing the correct way before you calculate.

Exact, defined
1 in = 0.0254 m, so 1 ft = 0.3048 m and 1 yd = 0.9144 m exactly.
Keep guard digits
Use exact factors or sufficient digits while calculating; round the displayed result only at the end and only as the task needs.
Match dimensions
Length converts to length, area to area, volume to volume, and force to force. A calculator cannot make incompatible dimensions meaningful.
Powers apply to the whole conversion

Powers apply to the whole conversion

Area and volume are not lengths with decorative superscripts. The conversion factor itself must be squared or cubed.

Why a single linear factor is not enough.

Area(1 ft)2 = (0.3048 m)21 ft2 = 0.09290304 m2

Time squared(1 min)2 = (60 s)21 min2 = 3,600 s2

For example, 4 m2 × (1 ft / 0.3048 m)2 = 43.0556 ft2, which is sensibly reported as 43.1 ft2.

For liquid capacity, 1 m3 = 1,000 L and 1 U.S. gal = 3.785411784 L. The converter labels this as a U.S. liquid gallon so it cannot be mistaken for an Imperial gallon.

Dimensional analysis is also a design check

If a mass density is in kg/m3 and a CAD model volume is in m3, the cubic meters cancel and the result is kilograms. That is why CAD mass-property settings, material cards, and drawing units must be read together rather than as separate menus.

Conversion bench

Conversion bench

This tool uses exact internal factors where standards define them. It only converts within one quantity type; a length cannot become a speed without additional information.

Convert a quantity

Speed is a nonnegative magnitude and has no direction. A negative signed value represents a velocity component opposite the chosen positive direction.

Result: 39.3701 ft

12 m × (1 ft / 0.3048 m) = 39.370078740… ft ≈ 39.3701 ft.

CNC production calculation

CNC production calculation

A CNC program estimates 4 min 15 s per part. The operator uses 30 min of an 8 h shift for setup. How many complete parts fit in the shift?

  1. Convert the cycle: 4 min 15 s = 4.25 min.
  2. Find machine-running time: 8 h × (60 min / 1 h) − 30 min = 450 min.
  3. Divide running time by cycle time: 450 min / 4.25 min per part = 105.882....

105 complete parts. The fractional result is time into the 106th cycle, not a finished part. This assumes one machine, no unplanned stops, and that the stated cycle time already includes every repeatable operation.

Two more conversion cases from the unit

Machine run time: an automated machine has operated for 15 years and 150 days. With the stated classroom assumption of 365 days per year, (15 × 365 + 150) d × (24 h / 1 d) = 135,000 h. Real maintenance records should use actual calendar dates and include leap days.

Supply-chain fuel: a truck rated 15 mpg has 15 mi/U.S. gal × (1.609344 km / 1 mi) × (1 U.S. gal / 3.785411784 L) = 6.37716 km/L. A 150 km one-way route is a 300 km round trip, requiring 300 km / 6.37716 km/L = 47.0429 L, or 47.0 L, assuming the quoted fuel economy holds for the trip.

The NIST SI Units reference documents SI base and derived units. The NIST conversion conventions define the inch as exactly 0.0254 m; this page derives square and cubic factors from that exact value. U.S. liquid gallon values are explicitly labeled whenever they are used.
